Kidnappers arrested in Rivers after gun duel




        Kidnapping for ransom has become a major criminal activity across Nigeria and security operatives have always said they are equal to the task – In Rivers state, a four-man kidnapping gang engaged in a duel with the police and this resulted in the arrest of one of them The Nigerian Police Force has paraded a suspected professional kidnapper with the name, James Peter, who was said to be part of a four-man gang Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Don N Awunah, said on Thursday, December 1 that Peter was one of the kidnappers intercepted in Port Harcourt Rivers state after a gun duel with police officers. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter James Peter, the suspect “In continuation of targeted onslaught against crime and criminality throughout the country, the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) recorded a major breakthrough in Rivers and Bayelsa states. “Acting on credible intelligence and public support, on the 29th of November, 2016, the IRT intercepted a four-man gang of heavily armed kidnappers, notorious for terrorizing the waterways and kidnapping in Rivers and Bayelsa states, along Azikiwe Road, Port Harcourt on their way for an operation.

        “A gun duel ensued, after which three of the kidnappers were fatally wounded while one James Peter, male, aged 30 from Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa state was arrested,” Awunah said in a statement to journalists. He said Peter was giving useful information to the police concerning the gang’s operations and activities. The Nigerian Television Authority reports that weapons recovered from the kidnappers include one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), one AK47 rifle, chains of GPMG ammunition and two fully loaded AK47 magazines. The statement said the police were after the fleeing members of the gang.

         Kidnapping for ransom has become a major criminal activity across the country. The statement said Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, is urging Nigerians to always provide valuable information that would ensure peace in the country.
