Customs destroy N147m poultry products in Edo

The Nigeria Customs Service has destroyed illegally imported poultry products worth over N147 million in Benin, the Edo State capital.

The products, comprising 16,422 cartons of frozen food, were destroyed on Thursday by Customs operatives of the Federal Operation Unit, Zone C, in Benin.

Officer in charge of the Benin Axis, Usman-Shehu Dahiru, explained that the imported products were confiscated along the Benin-Ekiadolor Expressway on Wednesday night.

Dahiru noted that the illegally imported products were conveyed in a truck, but were intercepted at the Ovia River.

He said, “The items were carried inside a container with number GEXU 1329084 and conveyed in a Mack truck with Registration Number BDG 654 XL. The items were seized by officers and men of NCS on Wednesday at Ovia River, along Benin-Ekiadolor Expressway at about 8pm.

Dahiru pointed out that the frozen poultry products had a duty of N29.56m and duty paid value of N177.36m, adding that they were destroyed in line with the Federal Government’s policy on the importation of frozen products.

According to him, “The items were destroyed at Customs House destruction site in compliance with Federal Government’s policy on importation of frozen products.”
