Blind students cheat by colluding during WAEC - Official reveals

- An official of WAEC has revealed that most blind students collude to pass the examinations

- Frances Iweha-Onukwu revealed that this was because of poor preparation

- Mrs Iweha-Onukwu urged the Nigerian government to improve policies in relation to education

Blind student writing an exam

According to an official of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), among blind candidates, one of the most common examination malpractice was collusion.

Frances Iweha-Onukwu, who is the head of test administration of WAEC in Nigeria, revealed this in a press interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN), on Wednesday, December 28, in Lagos.

Mrs Iweha-Onukwu explaining the reasons why cheating by collusion was rampant among the blind students,, said it could be that the candidates were usually not well equipped individually for the examinations.

She described the performance of the students as ‘not too wonderful performance’, rising from the fact that they were poorly equipped.

“We have discovered that there is usually high incidence of collusion among blind candidates during examinations.

“That is why their performance has not really been anything wonderful.

“Our society is such that there have not been adequate and conscious efforts to take care of the challenged.

“There have not been enough trained personnel to guide blind candidates before being exposed to major external examination,” she said.

Speaking on the need for urgent policy reviews in education, the WAEC official said a situation where a teacher who studied Special Education in higher institution is employed to cater for the needs of physically challenged persons with a whole array of needs, was worrisome.

Voicing her confusion, she said: “I cannot explain how one teacher, who studied special education can be given the singular task of meeting the academic needs of the deaf, dumb, the blind and all others.

“Meanwhile, there are candidates who need personalize attention on one-on-one basis.

“If we intend to give the best and all-inclusive education, Federal Government must employ more trained teachers in special education to take care of the different defects among the physically challenged students.

“There must also be consciousness policy formulation that will take care of these persons.

“This is because there is ability in disability. These persons can do better if adequate care is given."

Meanwhile, in a press conference held in Abuja, the examination body said 176,621 candidates registered for the exam, while 172,699 candidates sat the examination.

According to WAEC, 66,497 candidates, representing 38.50%, obtained credits in five (5) subjects and above, including English language and mathematics.

Nigerian twins who broke the world mathematics record

Nigerians are intelligent group of people who will never fail to leave a landmark wherever they go. It is a thing of joy to know that both the young and old people of this nation will always do their best to put the country's name in the good light.

A set of 12-year-old twins have shocked the world with their remarkable performance in mathematics. This subject is a dreaded one among students in school as people find it hard to cope with the calculations and algebraic equations.

However, Paula and Peter Imafidon have proved to the world that it is quite possible to achieve any feat in as much as you set your heart upon it. This duo made mathematics look simple at their tender age.

Paula and Peter Imafidon were just 8-years-old when they broke the world mathematics record previously held by their old sister who was 9 at that time. Often referred to as the 'Wonder Twins', these children are known to be the youngest to ever pass the university of Cambridge's advanced mathematics.

The duo set the world record when they passed the A/AS-level mathematics papers. The black children who originally hails from Edo state in Nigeria live in the UK and have set a record in the history of Great Britain education.

It will be justifiable for us to conclude that the Imafidons are geniuses with the trail of records they have broken.

Anne-Marie Imafidon is the elder sister of the twins; she speaks 6 languages fluently and graduated from high school at the age of 10.

At the age of 13, she was granted a British scholarship to study mathematics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. The brilliant teenager got her masters degree from Oxford University 4 years later.

All the members of the Imafidon family are known for one broken record or the other. The parents of these brilliant children are Dr. Chris and Ann Imafidon.

The twins with Anne-Marie

The father of these wonderful and brainy kids moved to London from Edo state about 30 years ago. He works as a renowned scholar and international education consultant to several governments.

He has a unique school of thought when it comes to teaching children as he believes every child has a different and unique way of assimilating.

Tony Umez gets shocker after flaunting daughter

Sometimes, the past never stays the past, and some memories just don’t go away, and if they do, there are some people who never forget. As many Nollywood actors will tell you, they have had to pay some price for some unpopular roles they have interpreted in their careers at one point or another. At least one recent victim is actor Tony Umez who was reminded of his exploits in featuring in highly sexually explicit movies when he flaunted his beautiful daughter on Instagram days ago.

Tony Umez and daughter It was his wedding anniversary and he decided to flaunt his family, including the daughter, only to be greeted by caustic comments of ‘sins of the fathers shall be visited on the children”. 30 years after Nobel Prize win, arts community celebrates Soyinka

Last Sunday remains a memorable day in the Nigerian theatre scene, as the Committee For Relevant Art (CORA) organised an Arthouse Forum in collaboration with National Troupe of Nigeria (NTN). The forum examined the influence of Death And The King’s Horseman, one of Professor Wole Soyinka’s classics, on the Nigerian and African dramatic writings and theatre scholarship in 40 years since the play was published.

Held at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, the forum had Ben Tomoloju, moderating, Dr. Tiunji Azeez of Lagos State University, Ojo, Nollywood actor/ theatre practitioner, Francis Onwuche, theatre director/choreographer, Segun Adefila, Publisher of Shekere magazine, Temi Halim and theatre designer, Vincent Sina Ayodele discussing ‘40 Years Of Death And The King’s Horseman’.

Taking a go on how the concept of death in the play has changed the texture and nature of African drama and theatre in the past decades, Azeez noted that the concept has brought an evolution in the African dramaturgy because it introduced a philosophy of the African worldview of the past, the present and the future that have something in common with the present. It deduces, he noted that, life as a continuum.

According to him, Soyinka conceived a theory of the fourth stage through the mystery of Ogun to the birth of Yoruba tragedy, adding that it has defined what African tragedy is, adding that other African playwrights have tolled his path.

Onwuche noted that the play is intriguing and touches the various levels of human conflict in life, and stressed that the person that has been dedicated to die must have had all the privileges of a good life, knowing that he has been so destined to die. To him, Elesin Oba deserves to die, as he had all that was due him while on earth.

Still on the concept of death, Ayodele noted that the play brings to the fore the tragedy of the noble, the tragedy of the common man and the communal tragedy, which makes it a total theatre.

On what ideological bloc, if any, the play belongs, Azeez said none, stating, however, that though in 1975 when the play was written it was the vogue to either belong to the Marxist’s bloc or remain a pariah. He said the play has nothing to do with a revolution. Rather, it is an exposition of the African culture because Elesin Oba’s son is educated, having studied medicine in England, only to return home to relate with his people. The theatre academic noted that the play exposes the hypocrisy of the Western world and opened the idea of self-sacrifice.

While juxtaposing the play with extreme nationalism happing across the globe, particularly the Brexit and Trump, the U.S. President-elect, who is toying with the idea of sending non-Americans, especially Africans, out of his country, Halim said the play should not be seen from such narrow perspective. She explained that it is more of a Yoruba play, preferring the Yoruba version to the English language translation. She, however, queried if really Death And The King’s Horseman is a tragedy. She stated that Soyinka’s translation of what informed the play from Yoruba to English language made him to use words that are nearest to the meaning of the original words in English. She demanded what the Yoruba meaning of tragedy is, adding that the play should be seen from the perspective of the Yoruba people and culture rather than expanding it, saying expanding the scope may make it lose its essence and meaning.

On the lessons of the plays, she asked if African societies have actually made any remarkable progress from the 1940s when the event that led to the play happened. She called on African leaders to explore African ideas, go back to African system of education that conditions the individual to be responsive and responsible to his/her society, rather than the individualistic nature western system of education and culture have created in us.

The forum marked part of activities to celebrate Professor Soyinka’s winning of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 and the 40th year of writing the play. There was a command performance of the play, which had the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, as special guest of honour.

Before the performance, Mohammed said, “Professor Soyinka’s literary creativity, ingenuity and contributions to the growth and development of literature and dramatic arts can easily be described as legendary. He has continued to play vital roles in the development of arts, culture and democracy in Nigeria and around the world. I want to say that we will continue to count on his support in our quest to develop and promote our country’s creative industry to enhance its contributions to the national economy.

“The creative industry and its important component, the performing arts, have been optimally and gainfully harnessed by most countries of the world, especially in Europe, America and Asia, to uplift their economies. Even countries in the African continent like South Africa, Kenya and Egypt have optimally harnessed their creative industry for the same purpose. Nigeria has a vast and rich cultural heritage, and if this is strategically re-positioned through increased investment and viable partnerships, it will further drive tourism and significantly lift the Nigerian economy.

“I am glad to report that our efforts to lift the creative industry have received support from President Muhammadu Buhari. Not only has the President rallied support for the sector, he has also directed that such support must reflect in the budget of the Ministry of Information and Culture in 2017. We will leverage on such high level support to further our plan to develop our country’s creative industry and also enhance its contribution to the national economy.”

He highlighted part of the steps government has taken to support the creative industry by reaching out to organisations that have the capacity and that can utilise their business knowledge, network and technical expertise to assist the ministry in the development of the creative industry. He revealed that government has signed partnership agreements with the Tony Elumelu Foundation and the British Council to promote and support the sector.

“An innovative part of the collaboration is the plan to convene a Creative Economy Task Force to map the creative industry to provide a better picture of what is happening on the ground and help inform policy development,” he concluded.

JAMB SET TO REDUCE 180 CUT-OFF MARK FOR 2016/2017 ACADEMIC SESSION

/

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has concluded arrangements to reduce the 180 cut-off mark for admission to tertiary institutions.

The registrar and chief executive of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said this during the second technical committee meeting for 2016 Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria, at the Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, adding that the decision became imperative as a result of the inability of some of the institutions to implement the cut-off mark.

According to the registrar, “It was in a meeting of the Board of higher institutions and other Stakeholders that a decision of 180 as the 2016 National cut-off mark was reached.”

He, however, stressed that many institutions, though part of the decision, had expressed concern on their inability to effect this cut-off mark as they are finding it difficult to fill a reasonable percentage of their quota if the rule is strictly applied as we insist.

“A large number of institutions, particularly the budding ones, have applied for a waiver to enable them admit candidates who in some instances scored below 180 marks. For some, this may sound unreasonable with the largely false impression that a large percentage of those who score above 180 and are qualified for admission cannot find any placement in our institutions.

“ I think this cry needs attention, otherwise, some of these institutions whether public or privately-owned may soon begin to wobble or even close shops. This will be counter-productive and even defeat the Government Policy of expansion of access to higher education and manpower development.”

Oloyede added that “As a Board, we have studied the trend of admissions and have come up with a finding that hardly do the institutions collectively fill their quota annually. Indeed, in some cases, up to 50% of approved quota is wasted particularly by upright institutions which do not circumspect the rule. Unfortunately, a large number of institutions flagrantly disregarded the cut-off and many other policies yet they found a way to eventually regularize the illegal admissions through corrupt process.”

He however noted that the new flexible cut-off will only be applicable to institutions that have exhausted the list of candidates that scored the 180 cut-off mark.

“As a Board, we have collated the requests from the various Senates and Academic Boards and have made your pleas known to appropriate authorities . Just this morning we received a green light on flexible cut-off mark only for institutions which have exhausted the list of candidates with 180 and above, subject , of course to a minimum acceptable to JAMB and meeting of other pre-requisite”, he added.

He however assured that the Board would cooperate with the various institutions in carrying out the mandates of their respective Senates and Academic Boards on admission matters, adding that, “the Board would not impose candidates on them but, as a referee, would ensure that no applicant is unjustifiably denied the opportunity of access to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

“In this respect, together, we should be seen in a conspicuous and proven manner that we have the interest of the Nation in mind in carrying out our statutory functions”.

He warned that no institution, whether Federal or State, will be allowed to continue with admission of students after the November 30th deadline.

No Going Back On Strike, ASUU Vows

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says there is no going back on its one-week warning strike scheduled to begin today.

Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, the union’s National President, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone on Tuesday in Lagos that the strike would be total.

NAN reports that the union leadership, after its emergency executive committee meeting, declared the warning strike at a news conference on Monday in Abuja.

Ogunyemi said chronic under-funding of the sector through low budgetary allocation, which went from 11 per cent in 2015 to eight per cent in 2016, did not go down well with the union.

He pointed out the failure of government to implement the 2009 agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as some of the reasons for embarking on the warning strike.

The president said that its members were tired of what they described as “government’s empty promises’’ in setting up its negotiation team for the review of agreement as consistently requested by ASUU since 2012.

“There shall be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of our branches while the strike lasts.’’

According to him, the union will put machinery in place to ensure that there is total compliance during the strike.

He explained that the essence of the warning strike was to draw attention of concern stakeholders and the general public to the challenges that the unions, universities and other stakeholders in the sector were facing.

Housewife beaten to coma for investing family savings in MMM

A housewife, identified as Mrs. Ogenyi, has been beaten to stupor by her angry husband for allegedly investing the family’s saving in Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, otherwise known as MMM.

DAILY POST gathered that problem ensued between the couple, who resides on Balogun Street, Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos Sunday afternoon, after the husband returned from a trip to his hometown in Benue and discovered that the family saving box was missing.

On inquiry from his son, Oche, the father was informed that the mother went out with her friend around 4pm and had not returned.

The husband who works as a driver with one of the commercial transport companies later found the saving box broken and empty in the wardrobe.

A co-tenant informed our reporter that on her return, the woman was shocked to see the husband as he was not expected home until month end due to the nature of his job.

According to the eyewitness, the husband inquired to know who broke the saving box but the wife could not give him any satisfactory answer.

“When the husband threatened to beat the wife if she fails to tell him who broke the box, she accepted breaking the box and investing the money into MMM. She thought she could get 30 per cent of her income and replace the money before the husband could return,” the source said.

The source said the husband had saved the money, over N86, 000, for their new accommodation.

Angered by her action, the husband descended on the wife in commando style, beating her blue black.

All her efforts to explain to the husband that the money would yield income in the next 30 days fell on deaf ears as the husband insisted she must cough out the money before morning.

The man, who locked the door of their one room apartment to prevent sympatisers from rescuing the helpless woman eventually hit the woman with breakable plate and she collapsed.

The source said on realizing his wife was unconscious, he quickly ran out of the room, living the woman and their three-year-old son and fled to unknown destination.

The neighbours took her to the hospital where she is currently battling for her life.

Our reporter contacted the Lagos State PPRO, Dolapo Badmus, for her reaction.

She has not responded to a text message as the time of filing this report.

Recall that the House of Representatives had last week directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to immediately go after the promoters of the MMM.

ASUU Strike: Senate asks Saraki to mediate

The Nigerian Senate has mandated its President, Bukola Saraki, to personally lead the intervention towards resolving the brewing industrial crisis between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The Senate resolved to muster efforts at stopping a protracted ASUU strike on Tuesday, barely 24 hours after the Union announced one-week warning strike, starting tomorrow.

The Senate resolution followed a motion on “matter of urgent national importance” with regards to the planned ASUU industrial action by Jibrin Barau (APC-Kano).

The warning strike, ASUU said, is over the failure of the Federal Government to implement terms of the 2009 and 2013 agreements.

“Many aspects of the 2013 MoU and the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government have either been unimplemented or despairingly handled,” ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, said at the University of Abuja on Monday.

“The agreements are: Payments of staff entitlements since December 2015, funding of universities for revitalisation, pension, TSA and university autonomy and renegotiation of 2009 Agreement.”

Backing ASUU in his motion, Mr. Barau argued that ASUU was agitating for smooth running of Nigerian public universities and staff welfare which basically formed the terms of the agreements perfunctorily implemented – or not implemented at all – by the Federal Government.

In his contribution, Danjuma Goje (APC-Gombe), lamented plights of students of public universities whenever lecturers embark on strike, thereby calling for avoidance of ASUU strike.

In 2013, students in all Nigerian public universities, except University of Ilorin, were not in their schools for six months following that year’s ASUU strike.

As a “stabilising arm”, Senate Leader, Ali Ndume said, the Senate should immediately intervene.

This was echoed by Emmanuel Paulker (PDP-Bayelsa) who added that the Senate a should “do all within its powers to totally” stop ASUU strike.

He said the Federal Government should reach for a middle point with respect to ASUU’s demand that universities be removed from TSA implementation.

Said ASUU President, Mr. Ogunyemi, “With the introduction of TSA, the federal universities find it extremely difficult to discharge their core responsibilities of teaching, research and community services.”

Besides the resolution that Mr. Saraki lead intervention efforts, the Senate also commended the lecturers for choosing dialogue over confrontation in pressing for implementation of the agreements with the government; and resolved to ensure improved funding for education in the 2017 budget.

ASUU had “wondered aloud why allocation to education dropped from 11 per cent in 2015 to eight per cent in 2016.”
