Couple of state Governors in the past and some recently banned the activities of the illegal levy and tax collection by miscreants/ Agberos. The ban however was not sustained for too long. Some did not survive beyond 5months. A typical example was during the time of Babatunde Fashola in Lagos State. It happened also during the tenure of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State.The ban is usually a difficult thing to sustain as some top government officials are beneficiaries of the illegal collection and again this miscreants have the capacity to decide who wins the election. So most governors play along to save their political relevance and their party from going into extinction in the state.
Today the governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has taken yet another bold and necessary step to put to an end to the activities of this illegal collection of levies and taxes by some group of unscrupulous individuals. For me, this is a welcome development and am hoping that the ban is sustained. Any move to curtail the activities of miscreants by Edo State Government will get my support as they are actually menace to my dear state.
A ban on the activities of the miscreants will have a resultant effect of increase in crime rate. I hereby urge the state government to put measures in place to prevent crime in the state.
The decision of the State governor will no doubt irk and outrage the beneficiaries of the illegal collection. The governor should not give a hoot about that as what should be important to him is good governance.
